First held in 1982, the Windsor Half Marathon has grown over more than four decades into one of the United Kingdom’s most respected and picturesque road races. Set against the magnificent backdrop of Windsor Castle and the sweeping landscapes of Windsor Great Park, the event has become a staple of the autumn running season, drawing thousands of participants from across the UK and beyond each September.
Over the years the race has combined sporting challenge, scenic beauty, and community spirit. Its undulating 13.1-mile course, which starts and finishes on the iconic Long Walk within the park, winds through quiet park roads and past historic landmarks — a blend of regal heritage and athletic endeavour that makes the event unique in British road running.
A defining figure in the event’s more recent history is Peter Hier, who took over as race director nearly three decades ago. For around 27 years, Hier has overseen the organisation and growth of the half marathon, guiding it through changing times while maintaining high standards of race management, community involvement, and runner experience. His leadership has helped sustain the event’s reputation as both a competitive race and a beloved annual tradition.
As the calendar turns to 2027, the Windsor Half Marathon will mark its 43rd year, a testament to its lasting appeal and the enduring enthusiasm of runners, volunteers, and the wider Windsor community. It will also join the RUN-FEST family of events including Richmond RUN-FEST and Kew The Run. Joanne Tranter & Tom Bedford will take over as race directors.
From its early days in the 1980s to its ongoing role as a highlight of the UK’s road racing calendar, the Windsor Half remains a celebration of athletic endeavour, scenic beauty, and tradition — firmly rooted in the historic landscape of Windsor Great Park.
